May be caused by rupture of the posterior tibial tendon, degenerative arthritis of the midfoot or hindfoot, diabetic Charcot neuroarthropathy, or inflammatory arthritis of the hindfoot. Pes planus (PP) is the loss of the medial longitudinal arch of the foot.

Within the limits of this systematic review it was determined that low level evidence exists that FOs positively impact on rearfoot kinematics, kinetics and physical function in adults with flexible pes planus. The small number of studies included and the risk of bias within the studies mean the clinical implications of the results of this review are not known. Foot orthoses, specifically Root and modified Root devices, have been used for over 40 years with ‘arch inserts' pre-dating them by over a century 18 This review indicates that there are measurable consequences to FO use for the flexible pes planus in adults but these impacts are minimal. This will allow future research to direct the development of robust and effective intervention pathways that offer the best possible outcome to the flexible pes planus adult population. People with a high arch (Pes Cavus) are also called 'over-supinators'. This means that the foot stays rigid at all times and lacks its natural shock-absorbing mechanism. Interestingly, the arches may appear quite normal when sitting (or even standing up-right), but when we start to walk the problem of over-pronation becomes evident...with every step we take the arches collapse and the ankles roll inwards.

With Plantar Fasciitis, the most common condition caused by over-pronation, the feet flatten and cause the fibrous band of ligaments under the feet to over stretch, resulting in a Heel Spur is a bony growth on the heel. If you are suffering from over-pronation (70% of the population does) numerous complaints may occur due to your poor walking posture. As people approach their forties or fifties the poor foot function gives way to over-pronation resulting in excessive wear and tear of the feet, ankle and knee joints as well as the lower back. Mostly people accept these changes as normal signs of ageing, not realizing that the signs could be due to the fallen arches! An 'orthotic' or orthotic insole device inside the shoes can help restore the normal foot function. Orthotics realigns the foot and ankle-bones to their natural position thereby correcting the problem of over-pronation.

An indication that an individual has this condition is to look at the feet while standing and see if the instep comes into contact with the ground. Flexible Flat Feet: If a person can lift their toes up, and an arch forms, the flat foot is flexible, and will not require further treatment. However, there are other ways that a person can develop flat feet.

If your posterior tibial tendon is irritated or tight, it will pull on the bones and your feet may flatten. If your condition is severe enough, you need medical treatment to prevent losing all motion in your feet. If you tend to pronate - roll your foot and ankle in - when you walk or run you may cause your arch to fall. Pronating your foot and ankle interferes with the normal movement of your foot. You should land on your heel first and roll through the middle of your foot. Landing on the inside of your foot stresses foot and ankle bones, tendons and ligaments. This can lead to many problems including flat feet. Your podiatrist can examine the way you land on your foot and then design orthotics to help you move correctly. It is important to wear the right shoes for an activity, to provide necessary arch support. Making these corrections can relieve symptoms. The self test for fallen arches or flat feet is quite simple and easy to do. First wet the feet. Many children have flexible flat feet.
